Sky Blues in the Community proudly marked World Down Syndrome Day on Friday 20th March, attending the inaugural Birmingham County FA, Down Syndrome Celebration Football Festival.
Hosted at Solihull Moors’ 3G pitch, the evening brought together players and coaches from across the region in a celebration of inclusion through football. Delivered by Birmingham County FA in collaboration with SBitC, Midlands Down Syndrome United and Solihull Moors, the festival created a welcoming space filled with energy, positivity and community spirit.
Participants took part in an exciting tri-football tournament, alongside a variety of Comet-based fun activities designed to engage players of all abilities. Seven participants from SBitC’s Down Syndrome session proudly represented the programme, showing fantastic energy, teamwork, and enthusiasm throughout the evening.
The atmosphere of the evening was great, with smiles all around as players enjoyed the chance to compete, socialize, and express themselves through football. Events like this play a vital role in creating inclusive environments where everyone feels valued and supported, while also giving participants the opportunity to build confidence and develop new friendships.
Marianne Botterill, Community Cohesion Manager at SBitC, said “What an amazing event to be a part of and what a way to celebrate World Down Syndrome Day. It was incredible to see so many participants enjoying football, making new friends and just having fun together. Events like this really show the impact that inclusive sport can have. We cannot wait to attend next year!”
Ryan Kimberley, Disability Development Lead at BCFA said “The Down Syndrome celebrations festival went very well. It was amazing to see roughly 30 Down Syndrome players from three teams coming together to celebrate. I am extremely grateful for all the staff, parents/carers and players who were in attendance, having fun and making memories! We are aiming to run the annually moving forward and hopefully this inspires other clubs across the county to start this opportunity up!”
The celebrations didn’t stop at the final whistle. Players were rewarded for their efforts with a special medal presentation, giving everyone a moment to celebrate their achievements and feel proud of their contribution. There were plenty of opportunities for photos, capturing smiles, team moments, and the joy that defined the festival.
To round off a brilliant evening, participants and staff came together to enjoy pizza and refreshments, providing a relaxed and social ending where conversations, laughter, and new friendships continued off the pitch.
The event not only celebrated World Down Syndrome Day but also reinforced the ongoing commitment to making football accessible for all, ensuring that every player has the chance to be part of the game.
