Premier League Primary Stars is the Premier League’s national primary school education programme, designed to inspire children aged 5 to 11 to be active, learn, and develop important life skills using the appeal of professional football. The programme consists of interventions in maths & English, girls football participations, whilst also supporting teachers in their confidence and delivery of PE.
During this academic year, Sky Blues in the Community has been delivering Premier League Primary Stars sessions at St John’s C of E Primary School in Coventry, led by coach Harry. Throughout the programme, one pupil, Heidi, has particularly thrived during both the English and Maths Primary Stars sessions.
Here is what sky blues coach Harry had to say:
“In maths, Heidi has developed greater confidence and resilience. She now approaches tasks with a more positive mindset and is increasingly willing to attempt problem-solving activities independently, while also recognising that support is available from her teachers when she finds certain aspects more challenging. The use of sport-themed learning has been especially motivating for Heidi, particularly when tasks are linked to football. These activities have helped her strengthen her number skills, improve accuracy, and develop a clearer understanding of key mathematical concepts. She is also now more confident when explaining her reasoning, demonstrating a deeper level of understanding.
In English, Heidi has made notable progress in both reading and writing. Her passion for Coventry City Football Club has played a key role in engaging her learning. She especially excelled during a magazine project, where she created a Coventry City-themed magazine inspired by her favourite club. This project enabled Heidi to further develop her writing skills, expand her vocabulary, and improve her understanding of structure and presentation. She took great pride in her work, demonstrating creativity, attention to detail, and increased confidence in expressing her ideas.”
In recognition of her hard work and commitment during the sessions, Heidi was rewarded with a mascot experience at the Coventry City vs Oxford United match, which she described as “the best day of her life.” Reflecting on the impact of the programme, Heidi’s mum, Georgina, said:
“The sessions Harry and Sky Blues have put on have really helped Heidi in school. In subjects she has struggled with, they have helped her thrive.”
