SBitC’s MENtalk’s Safe Space has won the Award for Outstanding Contribution to Health and Wellbeing in Coventry at the 2026 Coventry Health and Wellbeing Awards.
Since 2023, Sky Blues in the Community has been working in partnership with Coventry City Council to deliver MENtalk’s Safe Space, a weekly wellbeing and activity group designed to support men who are new to the city. The programme provides a welcoming, supportive and confidential environment where men can connect with others and focus on improving their mental wellbeing.
Moving to a new city can often bring challenges such as isolation, anxiety and uncertainty. MENtalk’s Safe Space was created to address these issues by offering a structured setting where participants feel comfortable sharing experiences, discussing daily challenges and accessing support without judgement.
Each week, the group takes part in a football session followed by a range of structured learning activities designed to encourage emotional expression, build confidence and promote positive wellbeing. The relaxed nature of the sessions helps create an environment where communication can feel easier and more natural.
Alongside the activities, the programme provides helpful information and resources to support men in understanding and managing anxiety, as well as guidance on accessing local support services. Importantly, the sessions encourage peer connection, helping participants build friendships and develop a sense of community with others who may be facing similar challenges. The programme is supported through Big Lottery – Reaching Communities, whose funding has helped make MENtalk’s Safe Space possible.
On 4 March, the SBitC team attended an award ceremony at Coventry Council House, held in the Council Chambers and presented by the Deputy Lord Mayor. MENtalk’s Safe Space was named a winner, recognising the programme’s positive impact on health and wellbeing across Coventry.
