Holiday Activity and Food Programme
Sky Blues in the Community is proud to extend a heartfelt invitation to families across Coventry to join our Holiday Activities and Food (HAF) camps this year. As part of the Coventry Holiday Activities and Food Programme, our initiative offers a blend of fun activities and nutritious meals to Coventry pupils throughout the school holidays. These places are completely free for children who receive free school meals, with children and young people from all backgrounds warmly welcomed.
The HAF Programme holds profound significance for us at Sky Blues in the Community. Research has illuminated the challenges faced by families during school holidays, particularly those from low-income households. The “holiday experience gap” is a stark reality for many children, characterised by limited access to organised out-of-school activities, unhealthy nutrition, and physical health habits, and increased social isolation. Our HAF Programme is a direct response to these issues, grounded in evidence that free holiday clubs can have a profoundly positive impact on children and young people.
We understand that effective holiday clubs go beyond just providing meals. They must offer consistent and easily accessible enrichment activities, cover more than just breakfast or lunch, involve children and parents in food preparation, and forge local partnerships and connections, particularly within the voluntary and community organisation sector. Our HAF Programme embodies these principles, fostering a supportive environment where children can thrive.
The Programme works in partnership with Coventry City Council, the DfE, Moathouse Community Trust and the CBS Arena.
Since 2021 Sky Blues in the Community HAF Programme touched the lives of hundreds of young people across Coventry. Through engaging and enriching activities, we witnessed remarkable transformations: increased understanding of the importance of healthy eating and physical activity, development of resilience, character, and overall well-being, enhanced educational attainment, and greater engagement with school and other local services. Moreover, our programme ensured that children felt safe and connected, preventing social isolation and empowering them to lead fulfilling lives.
